Intravenous Fluid Administration as Therapy for Hypotension Secondary to Spinal Anesthesia

Abstract

Studying 175 surgical patients receiving hyperbaric spinal anesthesia, a comparison was made of various ways of treating hypotension secondary to sympathetic denervation: vasopressor agent (ephedrine), a drug with chronotropic action on the heart (atropine), and rapid intravenous infusion of a balanced electrolyte solution either before or after spinal block. Results indicated that atropine had little effect in alleviating hypotension, and vasopressor was usually successful although having occasional undesirable side effects. Intravenous fluids in surprisingly small amounts were successful in preventing or treating spinal hypotension in a majority of the patients and were especially useful in the older patients.
